The SELCO Power Plant - "the first plant of its kind in the Country” connected with the APTRANSCO grid for the first time in November 2003 marking a momentous day in the history of Science and Technology in India. Many changes have been made in the boiler since then to customize it to suit burning of RDF. Special protective measures were also taken up to protect it from firing effects of RDF. Since inception the power plant has generated above 74million units of power up to December 2005. This is a clear indication that this type of plants can become commercially viable provided a few the governments support them.

Apart from RDF firing, another special feature of power plant is the provision of Air Cooled Condenser in place of Conventional Water Cooled Condenser. This is the first of its kind application being done in the State of Andhra Pradesh. Though the capital cost is more, lot of water saving 30,000 liters per hour will be there and is essential in areas where there is no river near the power plant.

The auxiliary fuel is essential since RDF contains inherent moisture and is heterogeneous in nature, to maintain thermal balance in the boiler. Fly ash, the main by product in the power plant, is being regularly used by the brick manufacturers.
